Legacy Elementary Students Hear from a Pro Athlete

This school year, Legacy Elementary introduced free-time clubs. Students have the opportunity to join any club of their choosing during the designated weekly club time. The idea behind these clubs is to allow the students time in their busy class schedules to learn about something specific they are interested in.

One of the clubs available to students is the Sports Club, run by the Legacy Physical Education Teacher, Chastity Holland. The sports club focuses on specific athletes who have made great impacts in the sports world. Many of the athletes they students learn about are professional, however, it’s not a must. This club is made up of 14 third and fourth graders.

The Sports Club has been researching athletes such as Patrick Mahomes, Jessee Owens, Mary Lou Retton, and Joe Frasier. Some of the students had never heard of some of the athletes that they were researching, but in the end, they each enjoyed learning about new athletes.

Holland thought it would be exciting for the students to meet an athlete of the same caliber they were learning about. A fellow teacher at Legacy, Erica Palm, reached out to Trey Culver who was a former student of hers.

Culver is an American track and field athlete who competed in the high jump. He is a two-time NCAA champion and has competed for Team USA at the North American, Central American and Caribbean Championships.

Last Friday, Culver spoke to all the Legacy third, fourth, and fifth graders in the gym about his track and field career. He told the students how hard work and dedication carried him through high school, college, and professional sports. The students listened to Culver with rapt attention as they told them about his athletic accomplishments and how he was able to obtain them.

At the end of Culver’s motivation message, he opened the floor for questions. Many students eagerly waved their hands for a chance to ask their burning questions. Trey left Legacy with some parting gifts from the students, who left the assembly with an added dose of motivation to chase down their dreams.
