Each year, Legacy Elementary hosts an annual STEAM Night designed to foster parent and family engagement by connecting the Legacy community with the Lubbock community through STEAM education. Attendees explore science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics through interactive activities and engaging presentations.
Several local STEAM-related businesses and Legacy teachers set up interactive stations to showcase their industries. Fiber Max provided supplies for participants to create their own "dirt and worms" desserts while learning about soil and its properties. Texas Tech University hosted several booths, including STEM Core: Weddell Seals/Shoes of a Researcher, Animal and Food Sciences-Food Safety, Physics and Astronomy-Telescope Fun, Techsan Wind Team-Wind Energy, and representatives from the Lubbock Lake Landmark.
The Legacy Robotics team set up an interactive area where attendees could test their skills by controlling robots through a series of challenges. Legacy Art Teacher Alex Jasso hosted a Glow-in-the-Dark Art Show and provided students with the opportunity to create their own fossils. Additionally, math games were available for all grade levels, along with a Math Scavenger Hunt to engage participants in fun, educational challenges.
This year, Legacy had several businesses in the area who donated participation prizes for students to win. Starbucks, Smoothie King, Bahama Bucks, Dave & Busters, Main Event, Dario’s Pizza & Calzones, Whataburger, and Jersey Mike’s Subs all donated coupons for prizes. Some businesses donated enough for all students to receive at least one prize.
Several families shared that they attended this event because their students have loved participating in STEAM night the past couple of years.
“It is a great opportunity to bring students and their families together to participate in learning,” said Stephanie Nations, Legacy Assistant Principal. “This event helps built strong school community by keeping our parents and families engaged in school activities and the learning of their students.”
The annual Legacy STEAM Night opens students’ eyes to other learning opportunities available to them through the STEAM concepts. By connecting students and parents with local businesses, educators, and university experts, the event fostered curiosity, creativity, and a deeper appreciation for STEAM education. Many students left the event with excitement about education and even with new interests to pursue in the future.
