In fourth grade science, students are investigating mixtures and solutions this week. They are looking at mixtures and comparing and contrasting different ones. The students first learned to identify what a mixture is.
They observed substances such as school supplies, various coins, nails, and pencils. They identified that a mixture must have a combination of two or more substances, keep its own properties, and can be easily separated.
The students really enjoyed creating their own mixtures from food items that they provided such as Chex cereal, pretzels, M&M's, marshmallows, and goldfish. They were able to eat their mixtures and even made bags to share with teachers and staff throughout the building.
After the engaging experiment, students scooped out a portion of the mixture and graphed how many of each snack to incorporate their math skills.
“It is so important to incorporate hands on experiences for students to engage their senses through physical participation and help them make real world connections,” said Melinda Shough, fourth grade teacher at Legacy.
Shough stated that the students were so excited and engaged in this experiment. Anytime teachers can incorporate food into a lesson, it's going to be a hit!
