Spreading the Warmth at Legacy Elementary

By Allison Robertson

The temperatures are dropping, but the warmth is rising at Legacy Elementary! The Legacy Life Skills students have opened their own coffee business called "The Daily Grind," where staff can purchase a hot beverage to brighten up their day.

Staff at Legacy can purchase a coffee, hot tea, or hot chocolate from "The Daily Grind," and can even get it delivered to their rooms on Friday mornings.

Life Skills Teacher, Melanie Braune, said, "I got the idea from doing a food truck last year in my classroom, but I wanted to find a way to involve the whole school in our learning."

Ms. Braune applied for a grant from The Frenship Foundation and was selected as a winner! She was awarded the funds necessary to make "The Daily Grind" possible. Life Skills students are able to practice financial literacy, following directions, having a supervisor, good hygiene, and social skills as they fulfill the roles of barista, greeter, server, cashier, custodian, and stocker.

Thank you to the Frenship Foundation for helping make this unique learning experience possible!
